Early in the Covid-19 pandemic, UPC partnered with Brooklyn Laboratory Charter Schools and several leading design firms in NYC to solve some of the space and environmental challenges schools would face as students and staff returned. Together, the assembled team devised a comprehensive ‘Back-to-School Facilities Tool Kit’ which included a range of different solutions to address health, safety and spatial concerns.

UPC continued to work with Brooklyn LAB to implement the ‘Front Porch’ concept from the Facilities Toolkit, which provided a safe and effective solution to school arrival and entry. The Front Porch allows schools to expand their entrance to facilitate safe queuing, social distancing and pre-screening while having student body remain within a safe and sheltered space.
